WOODLAND, CA (MPG) - September is Suicide Prevention Month, and Yolo County is encouraging residents to take simple, meaningful steps to support people who may be struggling.
Suicide prevention can start with a conversation. Checking in, asking how someone is doing, listening without judgment and helping them connect with support can make a difference.
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24 hours a day by call, text or online chat. The service is free and confidential and connects people with trained crisis counselors who can listen, provide support and share helpful resources. People do not have to be suicidal or in crisis to reach out for support. Residents can also contact the Yolo County Mental Health Access Line at 888-965-6647, which is available 24 hours a day.
“Suicide prevention starts with connection,” said Sheila Allen, chair of the Yolo County Board of Supervisors. “Checking in, listening and helping someone find support are steps each of us can take. We want people throughout Yolo County to know that help is available and that they do not have to wait until a situation becomes a crisis to reach out.”
The Yolo County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution declaring September 2026 Suicide Prevention Month. The resolution notes that research shows people experiencing thoughts of suicide may feel relief when someone asks about them in a caring way, and that talking openly about suicide may reduce rather than increase suicidal thoughts. This year’s Suicide Prevention Month theme is “Start a Conversation. Be the Difference.” The theme reflects a focus on open, supportive conversations.
If you or someone you know needs support, call or text 988, or use the 988 Lifeline online chat. Support is free and confidential. Veterans, service members and their loved ones can call 988 and press 1 or text 838255. Spanish-language support is available through 988 by phone, text and chat. Call the Yolo County Mental Health Access Line at 888-965-6647, available 24/7.
Suicide prevention matters throughout the year. Residents are encouraged to save 988 in their phones, share it with someone they care about and reach out when they are concerned about themselves or someone else.
