WEST SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - Local author Enrique Baeza visited West Sacramento’s Westfield Village and Elkhorn Village elementary schools on May 13 to read his debut book “That Environmental Crusader Could Be Me” to students and hand out free copies. The event was part of United Way Kids Read, a partnership with school districts across the region to provide book readings and free books to elementary school children throughout the spring.
Baeza’s book is a children’s social-justice autobiography. It is inspired by his journey from childhood in a migrant camp to becoming a top investigator in California stopping polluters and protecting communities from environmental crimes. The story teaches children how to protect their planet and that they too can make a difference.
“That Environmental Crusader Could Be Me” was published fittingly on Earth Day (April 22) by Cielito Lindo Books, a publishing house focusing on bi-lingual books for Spanish speaking children. The founder is Baeza’s wife Leticia Ordas who has written other Cielito Lindo titles and is also an anchor/reporter for KCRA and MY38 in Sacramento. Baeza’s and Ordas’ two children have also contributed to stories making the company a truly family affair.
The May 13 event is an example of how the United Way California Capital Region has been a driving force across the region for more than 100 years, listening, responding and taking comprehensive action to meet local needs. The United Way mobilizes communities to build a future where everyone can reach their full potential and thrive. The Kids Read program helps build the critical skills needed for kids to excel throughout school and lay a foundation for adulthood.
