47 Kids Are Waiting for a CASA

Sep 30, 2025 09:53AM ● By Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children, Yolo County News Release

YOLO COUNTY, CA (MPG) - Hispanic and Latino youth make up the largest group of children in foster care in California — a striking reminder during Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 to Oct. 15) of how overrepresented Hispanic youth are in the foster care system.

Right now, 47 children are waiting for a CASA volunteer. Spanish-speaking and/or culturally connected volunteers help these children feel seen, heard, and supported. They create a bridge of understanding, helping young people build relationships and feel proud of who they are.

When children in care see someone who understands their background, speaks their language, or simply shows up consistently for them, it can make all the difference. Representation matters — not just in the media, but in their daily lives, in court hearings, and at important milestones like school graduations.

Every child deserves an advocate who reminds them that their culture is something to be celebrated, not overlooked, and that they are valued members of our community.

For many of these youth, a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is the one constant in their lives — someone who shows up when others can’t, who listens, who advocates for them in court and school, and who reminds them that they are valued, seen, and not alone.

“My CASA was the only person who showed up for me at my high school graduation. Knowing someone was there just for me made me feel like I mattered,” a former youth in foster care said.

Moments like these are powerful reminders of why CASAs are so critically important. When children in care have someone who consistently shows up — not just for the big moments, but for the small ones too — they are more likely to thrive, graduate, and believe in their own future.

Your time, your voice, and your commitment can change the story for a child in foster care. Together, we can make sure no child in Yolo County waits alone.
