YOLO COUNTY, CA (MPG) – At the Yolo County Board of Supervisors meeting on Sept. 9, the supervisors adopted a resolution declaring Saturday, Sept. 20, as the annual Coast and Creek Cleanup Day in Yolo County.

Yolo County District 1 Supervisor Oscar Villegas and District 3 Supervisor Chair Mary Vixie Sandy will host a Broderick Boat Ramp Cleanup in partnership with the California Coastal Commission (CCC) and their board colleagues from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 20 at 151 County Road 136 in West Sacramento.

“Coast and Creek Cleanup Day is more than just picking up trash, it’s about protecting our environment and coming together as a community to care for the places we all share,” said Yolo County Board of Supervisors Chair Mary Vixie Sandy. “By working side-by-side, we can leave our creeks, rivers and neighborhoods cleaner and stronger for the future.”

This year’s Coast and Creek Cleanup is part of the 41st statewide cleanup effort organized by the California Coastal Commission. More than 700 locations throughout California will be cleaned, covering more than 3,300 miles of coastlines, creeks, rivers, lakes and inland shorelines. In 2024, tens of thousands of volunteers statewide removed hundreds of thousands of pounds of trash, keeping it from flowing into waterways and eventually the Pacific Ocean.

This year’s theme is “Join the Treasure Hunt!” by turning California Coastal Cleanup Day into the world’s largest scavenger hunt. Special “trash” items will be hidden at cleanup sites across the state, including in Yolo County. Volunteers who find them can redeem their finds for valuable prizes, making cleanup day both fun and rewarding for all ages.

California Coastal Commission is a state agency dedicated to enhancing and protecting the California coast. Since the event’s inception, Cache Creek has been included for 37 years, with Yolo County playing a consistent role in mobilizing community volunteers. This year, Yolo County will host cleanup events at eight locations, including Cache Creek, Putah Creek, the Woodland Farmers Central Ditch, Davis Pond areas and the West Sacramento Broderick Boat Ramp.

“The Broderick Boat Ramp is a treasured part of West Sacramento and I am proud to host this year’s cleanup along the waterfront where I played as a kid and enjoyed as an adult,” said county Supervisor Villegas. “Coast and Creek Cleanup Day highlights the power of community partnerships from the California Coastal Commission to our local volunteers, all working together to protect and preserve our waterways. I encourage residents to join us in making a difference close to home.”
