WEST SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - The City of West Sacramento on July 10 broke ground on Washington Park, the 40th park citywide, marking a major milestone in the city’s ongoing efforts to expand access to green space.

The event brought together city leaders, project partners and community members to celebrate the park’s construction as part of the Four40 West housing development, a public-private partnership with BlackPine Communities.

Once complete, Washington Park will offer nearly a half-acre of recreational amenities, including flexible lawn space, shaded picnic areas, a children's play area and a new public art installation by Yolo County artist Roger Berry.

“Economic development and public space go hand in hand,” said Traci Michel, director of Economic Development and Housing. “Through smart, community-centered planning and partnerships like this one with BlackPine Communities, we’re not just building homes; we’re building connected, livable neighborhoods that support long-term prosperity.”

Washington Park fills a long-standing gap in recreational access for Washington District residents. Currently, the nearest playgrounds are located more than a mile away, separated by high-traffic roads and other physical barriers. This new neighborhood park ensures families with young children have safe, walkable access to the same types of amenities enjoyed in other parts of the city. The park, located at 6th and E streets, is expected to open in early 2026.

“Every resident deserves access to a clean, safe and vibrant park close to home,” said West Sacramento Mayor Martha Guerrero. “Washington Park is more than a playground, it's a symbol of environmental justice, smart growth and our commitment to climate resilience.”

Parks and Recreation Director Kate Smith highlighted the broader significance of the project, saying “This groundbreaking couldn’t come at a better time during Parks Make Life Better Month. Parks are where communities grow stronger, and with this project, we’re planting seeds for a more inclusive, connected West Sacramento.”
