WEST SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - The City of West Sacramento proudly celebrated the grand opening of the Sycamore Trail Overpass on May 29, marking a major milestone in the city’s vision to become one of the nation’s most bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly communities.
This new overpass is the first dedicated pedestrian and bicycle bridge in West Sacramento, creating a vital connection over U.S. Highway 50. The bridge completes Phase II of the Sycamore Trail Project, which will eventually link more neighborhoods and businesses.
The nearly two-mile multimodal trail now connects the northern and southern parts of the city, encouraging active transportation and a direct route to schools, sports fields and destinations previously blocked by the freeway.

Featuring distinctive architectural elements, locally-sourced construction materials and thoughtfully-designed community gathering spaces, the overpass embodies West Sacramento’s commitment to sustainability and healthy living.
"This overpass is more than a bridge, it’s a symbol of our dedication to creating safe, accessible pathways that bring our community together. We are proud to provide our residents with infrastructure that supports health, recreation, and sustainable transportation options. The Sycamore Trail Overpass truly connects us all,” said Mayor Martha Guerrero.
The May 29 event was highlighted by a community procession of cyclists, scooter riders and pedestrians crossing the new bridge from City Hall, followed by remarks from city leaders and project partners. The Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates (SABA) participated in the event, with Executive Director Deb Banks offering remarks on the importance of safe, accessible infrastructure for all road users.

"This overpass is a game-changer for active transportation in West Sacramento. It not only improves safety but also encourages more people to choose biking and walking as part of their daily lives. We’re thrilled to see the community embracing this new connection and look forward to the positive impact it will have on residents’ health and mobility,” said Banks.
Following the ribbon cutting, the River City Regiment Marching Band drum line led the first official crossing of the bridge, adding a celebratory atmosphere to the occasion.
The City of West Sacramento continues to prioritize investments in infrastructure that promote accessibility, sustainability and vibrant community life.
