Owl Walk & Talk to Be Held at Grasslands Regional Park
Nov 29, 2023 03:21PM ● By Yolo County News ReleaseYOLO COUNTY, CA (MPG) - Join Yolo County Library and the Yolo County General Services Department’s Parks Division for a free, fun, and informative event all about owls. The event will be held at Grasslands Regional Park, located at Mace Boulevard and Tremont Road in Davis, on Saturday, December 2, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
City of Davis Wildlife Resource Specialist, John McNerney, will provide an informative talk about owls, including tips and tricks on how to spot them, then lead participants on a walk to observe burrowing owls in their native habitat. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet a Great Horned Owl Ambassador from the California Raptor Center and learn more about these amazing birds.
Children can enjoy a variety of hands-on activities designed to spark their curiosity and creativity. Owl-themed crafts, such as masks and puppets, will be available for kids to make. They can also engage in scientific analysis through dissecting and analyzing barn owl pellets. “Pellets” are the cast-up remnants of an owl’s prey that they are unable to digest. Kids can see and identify the tiny bones from the owl’s meal, reconstruct the skeletons of the animals, and learn about the owl’s diet and place in the food web. Additionally, a scavenger hunt activity will be offered. Children who find the items on their handout can turn it in for a small prize.
No reservations are required for this event. Access from the parking lot to the event location is a gravel road and the walking path at Grasslands Regional Park is compacted dirt, which is not rated for accessibility. Participants are encouraged to bring water and binoculars and wear sturdy walking shoes and appropriate clothing, as the area may be muddy. If rain is in the forecast, the event will be moved to the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library, located at 315 E. 14th Street in Davis. Follow the library’s social media accounts on Instagram at @yolocountylibrary and on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/YoloCountyLibrary.org for up-to-date information on any changes.
This event is part of the library’s All Together Outside series which encourages community members to explore the natural world, learn about local wildlife and regional recreational opportunities, and explore the California State Parks with free day-use passes that library cardholders can borrow.
