CLARKSBURG, CA (MPG) - After the death of the owner of the Clarksburg Wine Company, which owns and operates the Old Sugar Mill in Clarksburg, the many wineries that operate tasting rooms at the property have joined together and formed The Old Sugar Mill Tenant Group to ensure the continuing operation of the Old Sugar Mill.

Foreclosure documents were filed on July 24 to begin proceedings against the late owner of the mill, which has no effect or relation to the Old Sugar Mill Tenants Group and the proceedings are expected to take up to 120 days.

The Old Sugar Mill is a historic tourist destination in the region, serving as a beautiful backdrop for weddings and events, as well as offering an opportunity to experience the 13 wineries’ tasting rooms.

“We want to say as loudly and widely as possible that the Old Sugar Mill remains open for business. As proud members of the Clarksburg community and tenants of the Old Sugar Mill, we unanimously agreed to step up and do what’s necessary to ensure operation and events are not disrupted by the pending transition of ownership,” said Steve Osegueda, the owner of Rendez-Vous Winery, a tasting room tenant at the mill. 

Osegueda said that the Old Sugar Mill Tenants Group is committed to ensuring that the transfer of ownership goes smoothly. 

The Clarksburg Winery Company’s doors were closed with a note on the door explaining that they would be closed due to "unforeseen circumstances,” with efforts to reopen “as quickly as possible.” The note said that wine club members would be notified when their club member allocations could be collected and thanked patrons for their patience and understanding. 

“We’ve heard the noteholder recognized the importance of the Old Sugar Mill to the Clarksburg community,” said Rina DiMare, the owner of Elevation Ten Winery. “They seem appreciative that, given the legal procedures they must assume, there’s a group of tenants truly dedicated to maintaining the property, businesses and events that make it unique in our region.”

The Old Sugar Mill is located at 35265 Willow Avenue in Clarksburg and is open everyday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about each winery, tasting appointments, events and more, visit oldsugarmill.com.
